Going on a vacation soon? You must be pretty anxious about, well, about everything. Plane tickets, itineraries, passports, hotels, and so on. But all that is manageable because you’re always thinking about it. Hence, the possibility of something slipping your mind are slim to none. So don’t worry about that.
What you’re probably missing, however, is preparing your home before you leave for your trip. You didn’t think of that, did you? But rest assured, here’s how to keep your home neat and safe while you’re away.
#1 Pre/Post Holiday House Cleanup
You’re probably not digging the whole cleaning vibe, but a bit of tidying up is absolutely necessary. So you better accept it and set your mind to it. My advice, take a buffer day off from work before and after the planned vacation. It’s much better to stay home for a day and catch up on all the chores you’ve been slacking on, like cleaning for instance. Also, nobody likes going for a holiday, knowing there’s some unfinished business waiting. So check your inbox make a few calls and get all work over with because you’re going on a holiday.
And in case you’re in over your head, get some help. The last time I went on a vacation I couldn’t be bothered with cleaning the entire house, so I booked a team of house cleaners to do it. Taking a buffer day off after the holiday will help you readjust, get over the jet lag, and set your mind on doing some work.
#2 Watch Over Your House
Don’t want to constantly think about whether someone broke into your home while trying to relax? Install a security system which allows you to see live feed from inside your home on your smartphone or tablet.
Have you ever left your home wondering whether you turned off the oven or unplugged the iron? I have. Beside the video feed, some security systems offer you extra features, like checking whether all appliances are off. Something like that is really worth to have a look at.
#3 Cancel the Newspaper and Mail Deliveries
Letters, newspapers and magazines piling up on your doorstep is a sure sign there’s nobody home. So before you go on a trip, put the magazine and newspaper delivery on hold and ask the post office to hold your mail for you while you’re away. That way when you get back you’ll just have to go to the post office and get your mail.
#4 Make You House Look Habitable
It’s the oldest trick in the book – making your house look like as if there’s someone living in there. And doing it is pretty easy. Just get some timers so that your house comes to life every now and then. Radios, TVs, lights, all of that will work for you in trying to keep burglars at bay. Just remember to set the times so that they turn on at random times, instead of following a pattern.
#5 Take Precaution
But running some household appliances is unnecessary while you’re away because of the utility expenses you’re accumulating. So unplugging them might be a good idea. Besides, that way you’ll make sure you’re protected from unexpected power surges which might damage the appliances, causing some costly repairs.
